Tales from The Past

From KU to Superclub: Privilege's Epic Tale

Discover the transformation of Privilege Ibiza, originally a humble restaurant and community pool, into the world's largest nightclub, a title crowned by the Guinness Book of Records. Privilege, once known as Club San Rafael and later as KU, has been at the epicentre of Ibiza's electrifying nightlife since the 1970s. Its journey from an open-air party haven to the superclub it is today, hosting up to 10,000 party-goers, reflects not just a change of name but the evolution of Ibiza's party culture itself. This iconic venue has witnessed performances from Freddie Mercury to modern electronic music legends, embodying the spirit of Ibiza's vibrant nightlife.

Highlights:

  • 1970s: Starts as Club San Rafael, a restaurant with a bar and community pool.

  • 1979: Sold to José Antonio Santamaría and rebranded as KU, becoming a polysexual, mainly gay, nightspot.

  • 1987: Hosts the filming of Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé's "Barcelona."

  • Early 1990s: Legislation forces the club to cover its dancefloor, transforming the open-air vibe.

  • 1995: Ownership changes to Jose Maria Etxaniz; KU is renamed Privilege.

  • 1994-2007: Hosts Manumission, one of the island's most famous party series.

  • 2003: Recognized by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest nightclub.

  • 2005-2006: Dispute with Manumission organizers leads to the end of its run at Privilege.

  • 2017: Hosts major electronic music events like Resistance and Afterlife.

  • 2019: Closed

  • 2022: Acquired by Bahía de San Antonio S.A, owned by Grupo Empresas Matutes

  • 2023: Gets €8.2m support from government for renovations

Festival Club Ibiza was the very first club on the island, opening in 1972. Through the 80s and 90s it was the home to many illegal raves.

Now it has fallen into complete disrepair and has been taken over by nature and graffiti artists.

The open air club is an incredible place to explore with the graffiti changing on an almost daily basis

There is plenty of dirt parking next to the club.

Alternatively, you can make a circular walk from the church at Sant Josep de sa Talaia. It is approximately 30 minutes each way.
