Tales from The Past

The Untold Origins of Ibiza's Party Scene

Before Ibiza became the world's party capital, it was a refuge for outcasts and creatives seeking freedom from Franco's Spain, evolving into a hotspot for rock 'n' roll thanks to Tony Pike and Pikes Hotel. This transition laid the groundwork for the island's infamous club culture. Discover how a blend of rock legends, hedonistic parties, and a spirit of rebellion turned Ibiza into a haven for music and party enthusiasts, reshaping its identity forever.

Highlights:

  • 1936: Creatives and outcasts begin fleeing to Ibiza from Franco's Spain.

  • 1960s: The island becomes a magnet for hippies drawn to Es Vedra's vibrations.

  • 1978: Tony Pike, an Australian Navy veteran, arrives in Ibiza and buys a 500-year-old finca, later transforming it into Pikes Hotel.

  • Early 1980s: Ibiza's club culture begins to emerge with venues like Pacha, Amnesia, and Club Ku.

  • 1983: Wham!'s "Club Tropicana" video, shot at Pikes Hotel, cements Ibiza and Pikes' party reputation.

  • 1987: German singer Nina Hagen holds a two-day punk wedding on the island.

  • 1994: Andy McKay and Dawn Hindle arrive in Ibiza, later becoming the owners of Pikes and founding Ibiza Rocks.

  • 2000s: Live music starts to decline as electronic dance music gains popularity.

  • 2018: Laws restricting live music performances are challenged, leading to changes that support live events.

  • Present: A resurgence in live music and a diversification of Ibiza's party scene reflects a return to its rock 'n' roll roots.
