Tales from The Past
Ibiza's Journey: From Hippies to Superclubs
Ibiza, an island known for its unparalleled party scene, has evolved dramatically over the decades. From a serene paradise attracting 1950s tourists to a hippie haven in the 60s, and the birthplace of the Balearic beat and super club culture in the late 80s, Ibiza's history is as colourful as its sunsets. This transformation has not only shaped its clubbing landscape but has also left an indelible mark on global fashion and music trends, making Ibiza a unique blend of cultural influences and a trendsetter in youth culture.
Highlights:
1950s: The beginning of modern tourism in Ibiza, lured by its natural beauty and tranquillity.
1960s: Arrival of the hippie movement, attracted by cheap rent and a rural lifestyle, creating a cultural hub.
1964: The Rolling Stones' visit to San Antonio, amplifying Ibiza's appeal to a broader audience.
Late 1960s: Ibiza becomes a European hippie refuge, further popularised by the film 'More' and its depiction of free love and decadence.
Late 1970s: Emergence of disco and club culture, with iconic venues like Amnesia and Pacha setting the scene.
1983: Derek Ridgers captures the island's vibrant nightlife, highlighting its influence on dance culture.
1987: British DJs like Danny Rampling and Paul Oakenfold visit, inspired to create UK's acid house scene.
1989: The fall of the Berlin Wall and house music's international rise, further elevating Ibiza's club scene.
1991: Amnesia's grand reopening, symbolising the peak of clubbing culture and escalating commercialisation.
1999: UNESCO declares Ibiza a World Heritage Site, recognising its cultural and natural significance.
2000s onwards: Ibiza becomes a global party hotspot, frequented by celebrities and music icons.
Through these transformative years, Ibiza has managed to retain its magnetic allure, continuing to be a pivotal influence in global fashion, music, and lifestyle trends.

Cueva de las Medusas
About
Cova de las Medusas is a unique cave with rock features that look like giant jellyfish (medusas).
For fans of hiking, we recommend starting at the church in Sant Vicent de sa Cala. It is about 1 hour to the coast and then a 20-30 minute scramble across a boulder field followed by a short climb (up a rope) into the cave.
On your return, we recommend stopping for a cold drink or a tasty Thai meal at Es Café “Casa Pepe”.
WARNING: Once you start descending to the coast down the very steep road, there is little/no phone signal. You should take lots of water and wear appropriate shoes. The boulder field is not suitable for dogs or young children. Details of the route can be found here.
Location
The hike starts at Sant Vicent de sa Cala church, 07811 Sant Vicent de sa Cala, Balearic Islands.
It is possible to drive closer to the coast, but the road is VERY steep and narrow, so only suitable for confident drivers in appropriate vehicles.
Timing
All year round.
